Discovered in a bag of snowdrop bulbs purchased at a hardware store in Swarthmore, PA, it was named by famed gardener Charles Cresson for Jack Potter, former director of the Scott Arboretum at Swarthmore College. Besides being a beautifully formed flower, It’s claim to fame is that it blooms in the fall - by Thanksgiving in my garden! So you’ll want to situate it where it will receive sun in the fall as well as being protected from snowdrifts in winter as it will remain evergreen until going dormant in spring. It is believed to be an evolutionary adaptation as this species elwesii usually blooms at the middle to end of winter. It’s an exciting American cultivar which has proven itself both here and abroad.
I received my original bulb from Charles Cresson and have grown it on from that one. It is a cultivar of Galanthus elwesii var. monostictus - having one mark on the inner segments.
