This rare, early-blooming placatus snowdrop was discovered under a cork oak in Henham Park, Suffolk by artist John Morley in 1984. It flowered around Christmastime, hence the name after the carol “I saw three ships come sailing in”. The flowers are relatively short with puckered outer segments reminding one of the ribs on sea scallop shells when viewed from above, or wind in the sails, if you wish. The inner segments are nearly solidly marked with green resembling the logo from Snapchat without the arms. If we get snow in December which remains frozen and the winter snow cover starts early, the flowers will merely appear delayed at the height of snowdrop season.
