From the garden of Veronica Cross, it is aptly named as it resembles the insect in its kinetic movement in the slightest breeze. She discovered it at Lower Hampton Farm, Stoke Lacy, Herefordshire in 1995. The marking on the inner segments as well as the elongated shape of the blooms recalls the eponymous insect as well as when it is closed, it recalls an alighted insect, long and narrow. A grouping of them on a warm day in the breeze can activate a swarm like event! It caused a sensation among galanthophiles when it was introduced. It is a genuine spotter’s snowdrop with its unmistakable presence and silhouette.
